The Founder

Emily Tisshaw

I am a writer but I don’t write because I’m good at it or because I think that I have a special skill which will lead me to a fruitful career, I write because I breathe. It’s as simple as that. I need to write to understand why I feel something, to make sense of the world and to express who I am — even if no one is listening.

My favourite work includes helping people achieve their writing dreams and discover themselves deeper through writing.

I also enjoy writing personal essays about my lived experience of disability, addiction, psychosis, depression and the resilience I built along the way, as well as features that centre around popular cultural phenomenon’s and how this intersects with the above topics. My work has been published in Stylist, Metro, Business Insider, HardCopy Online, Break the Needle and Sober News. I have also written for Low No Drinker magazine, a low and no alcohol magazine, and Within Reach, a charity magazine for people with limb difference.

I am currently working on my debut book; a guide book for teens and young adults about how to navigate through life with a physical disability. I have a Medium blog where I share my words and spend my days working on an array of writing projects ranging from commissioned articles to sensitivity reading; you can scan the services I offer here.

I created Healing Through Writing because of the transformational effect writing had on me. I learnt that I could not only heal my past by releasing it onto the page but I could also create new, better outcomes through the process of writing as it helped me to learn from my stories, gain a deeper understanding of who I am and clarity on what was missing from my life. This is why I am planning on launching my second course Creating Through Writing which is coming soon.

My favourite way to spend a day is getting out in nature for a walk and a sea swim, moving my body through running or dance and working on my creative projects.
